In these digital times, marketer have a variety of  tools to communicate with on the Internet: digital devices, smart devices and other technologies are not enough to make you a champ.Building a brand as a digital marketer it’s not just about the cool tools.

Communication is the key. Personal branding is all about communication. With lots of platforms, one might have a hard time keeping up with all of them.

Building a brand as a digital marketer does not revolve around content. Do not get me wrong, as content is a huge part of your reputation, but that’s not all.

You have to tell your story in your own unique way. Do not complicate things by trying to use big words, especially on your content, that will just end up confusing people.

Don’t make assumptions about your audience before telling a story; know your audience. It is easy to tell a story if it’s directed at a specific audience.

A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.

Now that you have told your story, do not hope, and believe, that just because you have a perfect profile and bio, that’s it.

If you use DM (direct messaging) for any questions, then people expect to get an answer from you. Sometimes you may get questions that are not specific to you area of expertise, but you still have to respond.

Brand image is how your audience will perceive you and how they will think of you. This takes time, and with time people will come to know.

A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well.

Ensure what you are thinking your brand to be, is also what the customer is thinking it to be.

First you have to believe in your brand, and then make us go with your believes. This is the only way to show your audience what they can achieve with your brand.

This can answer questions like: your brand name, your policies, the logo, colour. This is what makes you different from everybody else.

It’s important to build a personal brand because it’s the only thing you’re going to have. Your reputation online, and in the new business world is pretty much the game, so you’ve got to be a good person. You can’t hide anything, and more importantly, you’ve got to be out there at some level.

The best way for you to communicate to your audience as to what you believe in, is to choose what you are best at.

You have to find what you love. If you do not love something, you will be really wasting your time. You can’t do something just because everybody else is doing it.

Passion/niche is up to you, but you have to work hard, even if something is your passion, that does not mean it’s going to be easy.

Building a brand as a digital marketer means you have to choose a platform, on which you want to express yourself.

On some occasions, you might be working for a client. It may be up to you to tell them which platform will be the best for their company/brand.

They might already have their own idea, or choose a platform, so it’s on you to see what will work in their favour.

If you are a social media manager, it is okay to let your client know all the platforms that you can work with, and the ones that are new to you. 

Refrain from talking ill about something that you clearly do not understand. 

Examples include:

  • blog
  • youtube
  • instagram
  • podcast
  • tiktok

It should also resonate with you. Don’t follow convention. Do what you want to do.


You might do everything right, but the truth is: not everyone will like you. The ones that do, do so because they either love the person behind the brand, see a bit of themselves, or their idea about you.
